More on the boiler front:
Following the moving of the Marshall, the boiler inspector and Mendip Steam have had a look at it to determine how many of the stays require replacement. About 20% of the 300-odd stays should be done.
Apart from the Marshall, things have been moving on elsewhere around the site: The workbench has been moved from the corner of the main hall, shortened and fitted in the old boiler house/pump room. The large Ruston pistons will be moved into storage elsewhere on site and this now leaves a large space in the corner ready to take the Culverwell engine and clear up the middle of the hall. Once the Culverwell has been moved we hope to paint the hall floor to improve the appearance of the area.
Half an hour saw the governor for the gas pressure raiser turbine repaired. This was stripped down some time ago and the insides cleaned of the remains of the leather diaphragm and painted. A trip to a tyre fitters produced a tractor inner tube which was cut up and used to form the replacement diaphragm and the governor was put back together. It only remains to fit a link bar between the control valve and the governor and throw some steam at the turbine to see if it will work.
For some time, the Lister Startomatic has been a bit tricky to start, being very reluctant to start and get up to speed. This -it appears- is due in part to the valves not seating properly. Work has now started to sort out the problems, the first thing being to remove the head and replace the valves and decoke the engine.
