We are no longer using an online donations system. If you are interested in supporting us and our museum, please email steamteam at wzlet.org (replace at with @) and we will forward details of how to make a payment and where to send it.
Why raise funds for Westonzoyland Pumping Station?
Firstly; our general income is solely from donations, memberships and entrance fees to the museum. We do not receive ongoing funding from any local, regional or national government department. We currently have no paid employees; all the work is done by members on a volunteer basis.
So what does the money go towards?
There are the general running costs to consider, firstly. The major one is insurances, for the buildings on-site, public liability and engineering certification. Other outlays include the organisation's advertising and general items for the small bookshop and tearoom. Once these have been paid, then money goes towards the ongoing restoration of the machinery on-site, plus general maintenance of the buildings.
What does the Trust need money for at the moment?
The old pumping station building is in great need of restoration, but poses numerous difficulties due to its high-grade listed status. The estimated cost of total renovation exceeds £1 million. Despite some grants being available, the museum has limited administrative skills and most efforts to secure substantial grants have been foiled by red tape and hidden expenses. As well as the historic building, there are always ongoing repairs, refurbishments and upgrades within the main exhibition hall. There are plans gradually being put together for improvements in the basic visitor facilities; again, these require income for planning advice, applications, supplies, and eventual construction.
There are other machines on-site that have awaited restoration for some years, and are unlikely to be worked upon unless more money/volunteers is/are available.
