Lister Generator
Lister Generator
This is a Lister generating plant, built in Dursley, Gloucestershire, in 1955. They were commonly used in rural areas before electricity supplies were made available.
This generator has an 8 HP single cylinder diesel engine; its alternator has a maximum output of 4.5 kW at 240 volts AC 50 Hz. The control unit starts the engine automatically when an appliance is turned on. It continues operating till the last appliance is turned off.
The picture above shows the control gear for the engine set (before restoration). The wiring became badly damaged and worn during its time in mothballs; however, volunteers have worked steadily on it during 2003 and it is now up and running again. During October 2003, some anonymous donations were received for the Lister's "final touches", including a badly-needed fuel filter. The Trust is very grateful for these. Now in 2007, the engine is completed and running; it lives in its own brick shed, just beside the Marshall boiler cabin.
