The Modern Pumping Station
The machinery pictured here is in the new (1951) pumping station. It is owned and operated by the Environment Agency who are responsible for land drainage and flood defences. Unfortunately it is not open to the public, and except when in use, is locked. The pump is able to move 35 tons of water per minute, and develops enough head to pump at any state of the tide. The GM diesel engine has been replaced by a modern "Scania" six cylinder engine. Any attendant required here at any time would also appear to have a more comfortable lifestyle, judging by the chair.
