Wills Engine
This engine was built in 1896 by W & F Wills of Bridgwater. It is the only surviving example of their patented poppet valve engines. It was used at Somerset Bridge brickworks to drive a clay mixing mill.
The picture above shows the camshaft and valve gear. The inlet valve cams are fixed to an inner shaft that can be moved endwise by the governor, thus altering the cutoff to control the engine speed against a varying load.
